ANSWER
Yes, this can be used for hot water only by leaving the pod out. The pod holder should stay in place to help direct the water into the cup. If you are using it for both coffee and hot water, it is recommended that you rinse the pod holder after a coffee cycle to make sure there is no remaining coffee flavor.

This coffee maker uses standard 1 cup drip coffee and tea pods. You can not make instant coffee with this. You would probably need a hot water dispenser or a coffee maker that dispenses hot water.
