{"id":3637,"date":"2019-04-19T14:13:53","date_gmt":"2019-04-19T18:13:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.wasserstrom.com\/blog\/?p=3637"},"modified":"2019-05-16T09:46:48","modified_gmt":"2019-05-16T13:46:48","slug":"eu-passes-single-use-disposables-ban","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.wasserstrom.com\/blog\/2019\/04\/19\/eu-passes-single-use-disposables-ban\/","title":{"rendered":"EU Passes Single-Use Disposables Ban"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>About a year ago, we told you about the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wasserstrom.com\/blog\/2018\/05\/31\/europe-proposes-ban-plastic-products-used-in-foodservice\/\">European Union&#8217;s plan to address the issue of single-use plastics<\/a>.\u00a0On April 15, 2019, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2019-03-27\/plastic-plates-cutlery-cups-to-be-banned-in-europe-as-of-2021\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">EU passed a measure<\/a> supporting a sweeping single-use disposables ban to go into effect beginning in 2021.<\/p>\n<h6>\u201cPlastics poison our seas,\u201d said Belgian legislator Fr\u00e9d\u00e9rique Ries. \u201cIf we do not take action, by 2050 there will be more plastic than fish in the oceans.\u201d<\/h6>\n<p>This legislation is notable for a number of reasons. First, it is the <strong>largest disposables ban<\/strong> ever. The EU has 28 member countries and the proposal has broad support throughout the region. But perhaps even more impressive is the <strong>speed with which this legislation was approved<\/strong>. The initial proposal from the <strong>European Commission<\/strong> first proposed the restrictions in May of 2018. And now, less than a year later, the legislation has cleared all hurdles to be approved by the larger governing body.<\/p>\n<p>Although the majority of banned items are used in foodservice operations, the ban also includes items such as <strong>cotton swabs made with plastic<\/strong> and the <strong>plastic sticks used to hold novelty balloons<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The major items in the ban include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Cutlery<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Plates<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Straws<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Stirrers<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Plastic cups (also bans polystyrene cups)<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>No Bottle Ban<\/h2>\n<p>However, one category of plastic disposable is not banned by the new legislation. <strong>Plastic bottles will still be permitted<\/strong>, but with some caveats. First, the EU has set a target of <strong>90% collection for plastic bottles<\/strong>. In addition, beginning in 2025, bottles must be made with at least <strong>15% recycled materials<\/strong>. And this rate goes up to <strong>30% in 2030<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The new measures are aimed at <strong>curbing marine pollution<\/strong>. The EU estimates that 80% of the marine litter in the region comes from single-use plastics.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3641\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3641\" style=\"width: 330px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3641\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wasserstrom.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/eu-disposable-ban-ries.jpg\" alt=\"Belgian legislator Fr\u00e9d\u00e9rique Ries was instrumental is passing the single-use disposables ban.\" width=\"330\" height=\"543\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.wasserstrom.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/eu-disposable-ban-ries.jpg 330w, https:\/\/www.wasserstrom.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/eu-disposable-ban-ries-182x300.jpg 182w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 330px) 100vw, 330px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3641\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Belgian legislator Fr\u00e9d\u00e9rique Ries was instrumental is passing the single-use disposables ban.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Belgian legislator <strong>Fr\u00e9d\u00e9rique Ries<\/strong> helped to guide the legislation through the 751-seat Parliament.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPlastics poison our seas,\u201d said Ries, \u201cIf we do not take action, by 2050 there will be more plastic than fish in the oceans.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This new legislation may put a crimp in some foodservice and tourist businesses. But it does open a <strong>huge opportunity<\/strong> for those companies that can develop alternative, eco-friendly, sustainable disposables. However, to date, the biggest hurdle has been the cost of such alternatives.
