For the last several years, Dunkin\u2019 Donuts has been talking about eliminating its environmentally challenging Styrofoam cups. The chain first announced the decision in 2016 but news has been scant since then. However, a recent press release<\/a> indicates that the plans are back on track.<\/p>\n

The Styrofoam cups, which are not recyclable and are problematic for landfills, will be replaced with a double-walled paper cup. The new design will keep beverages hot while still being cool to the touch without the need for an extra sleeve.<\/p>\n

Dunkin’ Donuts quest for a new cup actually began as far back as 2012. However, making such a large change has proved to be challenging for the company as it strives to balance sustainability, cost and customer experience.<\/p>\n

According to a recent exchange with the Huffington Post<\/a>, one reason for the delay has been finding the right lid. Apparently, a new lid that was tested with the new paper cups proved to be unpopular with customers.<\/p>\n

But fear not! The new cups have been designed to work with the classic lids that customers have come to know and love.<\/p>\n

Dunkin’ reports that they hope to have all 9000 of their locations transferred over to the new cup design by 2020.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
