{"id":3293,"date":"2019-02-21T14:30:07","date_gmt":"2019-02-21T19:30:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.wasserstrom.com\/blog\/?p=3293"},"modified":"2020-04-23T15:22:34","modified_gmt":"2020-04-23T19:22:34","slug":"latex-glove-ban","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.wasserstrom.com\/blog\/2019\/02\/21\/latex-glove-ban\/","title":{"rendered":"Latex Glove Ban for Ohio Restaurants"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><strong>UPDATED<\/strong> &#8211;\u00a0 California enacted a ban of latex gloves that went into effect on January 1, 2020.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Ohio<\/strong> becomes the latest state to enact a latex glove ban for restaurants, foodservice and retail food establishments. Effective March 1, 2019, latex gloves will no longer be permitted. This latex glove ban is similar to laws on the books in several other states. These include <strong>California<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Connecticut<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Oregon<\/strong>, <strong>Hawaii<\/strong>, <strong>Arizona<\/strong> and <strong>Rhode Island<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Several other states are considering similar measures. And in other states such as New York, there are already laws in place to require signage in restaurants where latex gloves are used.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Latex sensitivity and latex allergies<\/strong> have been gaining more attention in recent years. Medical institutions have had latex alternatives available for many years.<\/p>\n<p>Latex, a <strong>component of natural rubber<\/strong>, is one of the most common materials for disposable gloves used in foodservice. However, people with latex allergies cannot use disposable latex gloves without causing an allergic reaction. Furthermore, the particles of latex can be transmitted to the prepared food served by those wearing latex gloves.<\/p>\n<p>According to\u00a0<strong>Chapter 3717-1-03.2 of the State of Ohio Uniform Food Safety Code<\/strong>, other materials such as <strong>nitrile<\/strong>, <strong>polyethylene<\/strong> and <strong>vinyl gloves<\/strong> are still permitted.<\/p>\n<p>As we reviewed in our recent <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wasserstrom.com\/blog\/2018\/10\/24\/disposable-gloves-buying-guide-vinyl-vs-latex-vs-poly-vs-nitrile-gloves\/\">Disposable Gloves Buying Guide<\/a><\/strong>, there are advantages and disadvantages for the different glove materials.<\/p>\n<p>Restaurants in Ohio have a short time to get used to the new regulation.
