These particles are ingested by marine life and bioaccumulate throughout the food chain, including high concentrations in the fish we eat. <strong>In fact, microplastics have become so ubiquitous that they are now found in the air, household dust, soil, glacial ice, human tissue and organs, including the brain, heart, and placenta<\/strong>, and much more. They are simply impossible to avoid.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Researchers estimate that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/microplastic-pollution-increasing-research-health-impact-regulation-1956329\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">we release about 40 megatons of microplastics per year<\/a>. These plastics never disappear; they only accumulate. Overwhelming, isn\u2019t it? It gets worse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At an accelerating rate, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.genevaenvironmentnetwork.org\/resources\/updates\/plastic-production-and-industry\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">fossil fuel and petrochemical industries are investing in plastics production<\/a> as a new market to sustain their profits. Recycling plastic <em>can<\/em> work. Certain types of plastic, particularly<a href=\"https:\/\/oceanworks.co\/blogs\/ocean-plastic-news\/what-are-the-top-plastics-that-get-recycled\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> PET (#1, like water bottles) and HDPE (#2, like milk jugs), have the highest recycling rates<\/a> and are widely accepted by facilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Otherwise, and despite public perception, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.technologyreview.com\/2023\/10\/12\/1081129\/plastic-recycling-climate-change-microplastics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the amount of plastic that is recycled is very low<\/a> with <strong>success rates around 5\u20126%.<\/strong> There are thousands of different types of plastic, and many are not compatible with each other.
