Founded in 1983, the&nbsp;Rainforest Alliance&nbsp;initially focused on&nbsp;forest conservation&nbsp;efforts. After <strong>recognizing the interconnectedness of forests and agricultural practices<\/strong>, they launched the&nbsp;Sustainable Agriculture program&nbsp;in the&nbsp;late 1980s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This ever-evolving coffee certification program casts a wide net by focusing on&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rainforest-alliance.org\/insights\/what-does-rainforest-alliance-certified-mean\/#:~:text=The%20Rainforest%20Alliance%20Certification%20Program,social%2C%20economic%2C%20and%20environmental.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">three pillars of sustainability:&nbsp;environmental,&nbsp;social, and&nbsp;economic.<\/a> The Rainforest Alliance\u2019s environmental standards&nbsp;include <strong>protecting forests, conserving water, <\/strong>and<strong> promoting biodiversity<\/strong>. Their social standards&nbsp;address <strong>fair labor practices, safe working conditions, <\/strong>and<strong> community development<\/strong>. The <a href=\"https:\/\/nationalzoo.si.edu\/migratory-birds\/bird-friendly\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Bird-Friendly certification<\/a> verifies that coffee farms <strong>maintain shade tree cover to provide a healthy habitat for migratory birds<\/strong> and reducing the need for pesticides.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the late \u201890s, scientists at the Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center raised concerns after observing a decline in migratory songbird populations. These scientists then <strong>linked their population decline to habitat loss in Latin American countries, right where many coffee farms were located<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To counter this phenomenon, the Bird-Friendly a certification program was born. This certification program both recognizes and rewards coffee producers who maintain shade-grown environments and show genuine efforts to combat any further ecological devastation for our winged friends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"wp-image-22623\" style=\"width: 150px;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wasserstrom.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/shadegrownLOGO_d48c6411-247d-41ef-a4f0-33821753e74a_2000x.jpg\" alt=\"Shade-grown\n\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.wasserstrom.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/shadegrownLOGO_d48c6411-247d-41ef-a4f0-33821753e74a_2000x.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.wasserstrom.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/shadegrownLOGO_d48c6411-247d-41ef-a4f0-33821753e74a_2000x-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/> Shade-Grown\u00a0 <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Although not an official certification at this time, coffee labeled &#8220;Shade-Grown&#8221; simply means producers provide shade for coffee plants in order <strong>to mimic natural forest ecosystems and promote biodiversity<\/strong>. As a label, it is very similar to the Smithsonian&#8217;s Bird-Friendly certification program. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Traditionally, coffee was grown under the shade of other trees, mimicking its natural forest habitat. Then, in the\u00a0mid-1970s, <strong>sun-tolerant coffee varieties and high-density farming practices<\/strong> <strong>were introduced<\/strong> to\u00a0increase yields. In light of this movement, coffee producers with the USDA Organic certification typically support <strong>soil health, biodiversity, <\/strong>and<strong> water quality<\/strong>. This government certification <strong>guarantees the use of approved organic practices<\/strong>, including keeping synthetic fertilizers and pesticides out of our morning cup of joe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"145\" height=\"200\" class=\"wp-image-22629\" style=\"width: 145px;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wasserstrom.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/FTC-Full-Seal_RGB.jpg\" alt=\"Fair trade\n\"> Fair Trade\u00a0<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.orinococoffeeandtea.com\/history-of-fair-trade-coffee\/\">Fair Trade certification<\/a> prioritizes fair wages for farmers and workers, ensuring they receive a minimum price and a premium for community development projects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The specific program for coffee certification began in 1988 in the Netherlands. This came after the dismantling of the International Coffee Agreement, which had previously helped regulate prices. The dismantling led to a decline in coffee prices for producers, and <strong>the Fair Trade certification aimed to offer an alternative market that ensured fairer prices for small-scale coffee farmers<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today, Fair Trade coffee certification remains an established system with multiple organizations involved, such as Fairtrade International and Fair Trade USA. While both Fair and Direct Trade initiatives share the goal of ensuring fair prices and improving conditions for coffee producers there is one key difference. <strong>Direct Trade&nbsp;emphasizes building long-term, transparent relationships between roasters and farmers<\/strong>, bypassing intermediaries and focusing on better pay for producers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a result, different organizations and roasters have implemented their own standards and verification methods to assure consumers that their coffee adheres to direct trade principles. To find Direct Trade beans, <strong>seek out roasters who highlight direct partnerships with specific farms or cooperatives.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Use Your Purchasing Power to Brew a Better Future<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Choosing ethically and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wasserstrom.com\/blog\/2023\/10\/02\/spotlight-on-sustainability-agave-straws\/\">sustainably sourced<\/a> coffee reduces your environmental footprint.
