However, Yelp says it hopes to roll out the hygiene score information to other states in the near future.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1686\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1686\" style=\"width: 322px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1686\" src=\"http:\/\/www.wasserstrom.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/yelp-health-ratings-blog.jpg\" alt=\"Yelp adds health inspection report scores\" width=\"322\" height=\"185\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.wasserstrom.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/yelp-health-ratings-blog.jpg 322w, https:\/\/www.wasserstrom.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/yelp-health-ratings-blog-300x172.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 322px) 100vw, 322px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1686\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Yelp has begun to show health inspection report scores as part of its reviews.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Yelp has partnered with a company called <a href=\"http:\/\/hdscores.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">HDScores<\/a> (Health Department Scores) that offers and <strong>online database of health inspection scores and reports for the restaurant industry<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>In a recent blog post, Yelp&#8217;s Senior VP for Public Policy, <strong>Luther Lowe<\/strong> noted that health inspections have been conducted for decades. However, the information is <strong>not typically very accessible to the average consumer<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnfortunately, this information is often buried on clunky \u2018dot gov\u2019 websites beyond the easy reach of consumers,\u201d says Lowe. \u201cOr equally inconvenient, it\u2019s accessible in the offline world, displayed somewhere in the physical business, and not always obvious to the diner.\u201d<\/p>\n<h6>\u201cPosting restaurant hygiene scores prominently on Yelp leads to a 12% decrease in purchase intentions for restaurants with poor scores relative to those with higher scores.\u201d<\/h6>\n<p>Lowe also notes that <strong>hospitalizations for foodborne illnesses go down<\/strong> when consumers are provided better access to restaurant hygiene scores. He sites a study by the <a href=\"https:\/\/drum.lib.umd.edu\/bitstream\/handle\/1903\/6641\/Mar%2005%20JEH%20Feature.pdf?sequence=1&amp;isAllowed=y\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Los Angeles restaurant industry<\/a> that also showed that better access to scores <strong>improved overall health practices in businesses<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>While this may all seem like good news for consumers, it certainly comes with some risks for businesses.\u00a0 This is especially relevant for those that earn less than satisfactory health ratings.<\/p>\n<p>Citing a different <a href=\"https:\/\/papers.ssrn.com\/sol3\/papers.cfm?abstract_id=3131900\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">study<\/a>, Lowe reports that &#8220;posting restaurant hygiene scores prominently on Yelp leads to a <strong>12% decrease in purchase intentions<\/strong> for restaurants with poor scores relative to those with higher scores.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Hopefully, this will serve as additional motivation for restaurants to maintain <strong>high standards for health and safety<\/strong>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Restaurant review site, Yelp, has just announced that it will be adding health inspection scores to its restaurant reviews.
