{"id":1054,"date":"2018-05-31T09:20:47","date_gmt":"2018-05-31T13:20:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.wasserstrom.com\/blog\/?p=1054"},"modified":"2018-05-31T09:17:35","modified_gmt":"2018-05-31T13:17:35","slug":"europe-proposes-ban-plastic-products-used-in-foodservice","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.wasserstrom.com\/blog\/2018\/05\/31\/europe-proposes-ban-plastic-products-used-in-foodservice\/","title":{"rendered":"Europe Proposes Ban on Plastic Products Used in Foodservice"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/europa.eu\/rapid\/press-release_IP-18-3927_en.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">European Commission is proposing a ban<\/a> on <strong>10 single-use plastic items that it says make up 70% of the trash<\/strong> that ends up in European waterways and beaches.<\/p>\n<p>While this is <strong>not a measure that is aimed exclusively at restaurants<\/strong> and other foodservice providers, those types of businesses will clearly be the <strong>most affected<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Items included in the ban proposal include <strong>plastic cutlery<\/strong>, <strong>plates<\/strong>, <strong>straws<\/strong>,\u00a0 and <strong>drink stirrers<\/strong>. <strong>Single-use, plastic drink containers<\/strong> will only be allowed if their <strong>caps and\/or lids remain attached<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The EU is also putting pressure on the industry to help <strong>cover the costs of waste management and clean up<\/strong> while also raising awareness of the use of disposable plastics for things like food containers, excess packaging and lightweight plastic bags. However, the proposal <strong>does not set specific targets<\/strong> for reduction or elimination of the use of things like plastic food containers that are prevalent in restaurants for takeout and delivery services.<\/p>\n<p>The proposal is not without hard costs. As <a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2018\/05\/28\/news\/europe-plastic-ban-proposal\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CNN Money reports<\/a>, the EU estimates that the new rules could <strong>cost businesses over $3.5 billion once<\/strong> <strong>fully enacted by the year 2030<\/strong>. However, they also note that the measures could <strong>save consumers over $7.5 billion<\/strong>, <strong>create 30,000 jobs<\/strong> and <strong>reduce or eliminate over $25 billion in environmental damage and clean up costs<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>What does this mean for restaurants and consumers in Europe? As reported by <a href=\"https:\/\/gizmodo.com\/the-eu-is-planning-a-ban-on-single-use-plastic-products-1826374339\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gizmodo<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The ban doesn\u2019t mean that consumers in the EU will suddenly be unable to get these items; instead, products like plastic forks and knives with \u201creadily available alternatives\u201d would be replaced with products made from more environmentally friendly materials like bioplastics.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2><strong>Could this type of proposal be coming to the US?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Probably not anytime soon.<\/p>\n<p>But there are glimmers of hope in the environmental community that such a movement could take hold. In 2016, <strong>California voters banned disposable, plastic bags<\/strong>. When compared to 2010 levels, they have found that <a href=\"https:\/\/earther.com\/california-s-plastic-bag-ban-appears-to-be-kicking-some-1820443038\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>plastic bag litter has dropped by a whopping 72 percent<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>As with any significant change of this kind, there are bound to be winners and losers. Disposables manufacturers that are able to create <strong>more environmentally friendly options<\/strong> for the foodservice industry <strong>at a reasonable cost<\/strong> stand to benefit the most.<\/p>\n<p>And with the significant <strong>expansion of the takeout and home delivery trend<\/strong> permeates the restaurant industry, this will be an issue that the <strong>industry will have to face in the foreseeable future<\/strong>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The European Commission is proposing a ban on 10 single-use plastic items that it says make up 70% of the trash that ends up in European waterways and beaches.
